WELCOME TO COONEY POTTERY
THE JOURNEY
Creative Process
Each piece begins as unformed clay on the potters wheel. Once shaped the vessel is then set aside till leather hard. Trimming, decorating, and attaching the handles are next. I use various techniques such as: carving, sgrafitto, slip trailing, etc. The piece is set aside to slowly dry for several days. Once bone dry, it is placed in the kiln and bisque fired to approximately 1700 degrees. After the bisque firing, it is ready for glaze. My glazes are unique combinations of various recipes I've found and formulated. The glaze application includes; dipping, pouring, brushing, and trailing. The last kiln firing reaches approximately 2200 degrees, which is then slowly cooled. The complete process takes from 8 to 10 days.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Margaret Cooney
As a strong advocate of an unhurried life, clay becomes the metaphor for Margaret, demonstrating the graceful beauty of life. Whether it's seen in a mark left by the potter's hand, or a subtle color change of the glaze, it takes patience, perseverance, and a deep love for the process to create such a piece. Although her work is utilitarian, it's primary purpose will be enjoyed by a slower pace
ABOUT ME
I have worked with clay for over 40 years. After earning a BFA from Herron School of Art, I became a studio potter in a small town in Indiana where I met my husband. Although I've taken a 25 year hiatus with 5 children and home education, I've stoked the fires of creativity by teaching art in private schools, co-ops, workshops, and private lessons. I'm now working as a studio potter in my home with a new body of clay, a fresh color palette, and a plethora of ideas.
